How to recognise dead wood standing

How to recognize dead wood standing is very simple in summer, as you are looking for trees with no leafs, but can be trickier in winter.

Look for very dry wood with branches that break easily. Bark that peals by itself, or tree sections where the bark have been removed are also valuables clues to find a dead standing tree.

All trees, even dead standing trees, are part of the biodiversity. Remember that dead trees are a vital home for many species of insects and fungus, and should be protected as well. Most of the time fallen wood is enough even for shelter building. So pull down a tree only if you really need to!

Make sure to leave no trace of your passing. Be sure to cut only as much wood as you need. A single 30cm-diameter spruce will heat you up one entire night without a shelter by -40°C. With a proper shelter it will last you ten days!
